In today's world, one can't imagine his life without a computer and other electronic gadgets like mobile phones and television. But the most fascinating thing about the computer is that it's heart is of the size of nanometers! This chip is made up of semiconducting materials such as Silicon on which has been established a complex circuit that processes the instruction to the computer.
The integrated circuit is nothing more than a very advanced electric circuit. An electric circuit is made from different electrical components such as transistors, resistors, capacitors and diodes, that are connected to each other in different ways.
The transistor acts like a switch. It can turn electricity on or off, or it can amplify current. A microprocessor, although so tiny, can hold billions of transistors which help in the transmission of data.
Interesting how a tiny chip can be so powerful. A single chip can handle our desktops! The idea of a single chip computer dates back to the time when the field of electronics and integrated circuit technology were still in their infancy.
The creation of the transistor in brought a boom in the research and development of integrated circuit technology. Intel was the first company to release a micro chip, a 4-bit all purpose chip, The Intel , in November The personal computer was first made possible by the development of the microprocessor during that year.
The personal computer was made possiible by the development of the microprocessor. Single chip computers cut costs dramatically and proved to be very reliable and effective. In , Intel introduced the 8-bit microprocessor which was 10 times faster than the microprocessor. The intel i7 microprocessors are the fastest microprocessors in present world. It comes in two variants, the quad core chip and the octa core chip with 8 MB of cache memory which is enough for the fast processing of the tasks.
The i7 is only 14 nm in size and is the fastest microprocessor! The future is brighter for the technology as IBM has produced the world's first commercial 7 nm chip! It is made up of Silicon-Germanium SiGe alloy. IBM claims a surface area reduction and power improvement of almost 50 percent over today's 10 nm chips. The new 7 nm chip holds 20 billion transistors! It will be able to perform tasks even before the blink of an eye!
In theory, 7nm should roll around in , and can easily beat the 10 nm chip in terms of performance. Intel will face a cut throat competition as soon as this chip comes out. The future is definitely going to be bright for all the computer geeks!
