P true A Eq. Annealed AISI steel. Su Sy 32 Sy 28 No standard solutions are provided. Visual, magnetic, and scratch tests are fast and inexpensive, so should all be done.

Results from these three would favor steel, cast iron, or maybe a less common ferrous material. The expectation would likely be hot-rolled steel. If it is desired to confirm this, either a weight or bending test could be done to check density or modulus of elasticity. The weight test is faster. From the measured weight of 7. Nickel steel and stainless steel have similar unit weights, but surface finish and darker coloring do not favor their selection. To select a likely specification from Table A, perform a Brinell hardness test, then use Eq.

Assuming the material is hot-rolled due to the rough surface finish, appropriate choices from Table A would be one of the higher carbon steels, such as hot-rolled AISI , , or Results from these three favor a softer, non-ferrous material like aluminum. From the measured weight of 2.

No other materials come close to this unit weight, so the material is likely aluminum. Results from these three favor a softer, non-ferrous copper-based material such as copper, brass, or bronze. To further distinguish the material, either a weight or bending test could be done to check density or modulus of elasticity. Is this feature helpful? Thank you for your feedback. Hardcover Verified Purchase. The images are generally good and large enough to understand and there are quite a few example problems, but they all are very basic. Be sure to dedicate time to go through the book on your own. The bible of mechanical engineering. This book covers a huge range of topics which will be useful to everyone from mechanical engineering students to engineering professionals. It doesn't have as many examples as some other engineering design books, but it makes up for this in its quality of content.

A few of the mechanical engineers that I work with carry this book on their shelves to use as reference. Would recommend to anyone who wants a great reference.

Paperback Verified Purchase. This is a great book, but my copy came with pages missing. Of course i only discovered this when i needed this section, which happened to be after the return window on the book.

I got screwed. I purchased this book for my ENGM Mechanical Engineering Design class. This textbook is filled with useful information, but without a professional to explain how to use many of the concepts presented, it is nearly useless. Until you have been taught the purpose of various tables and charts, and guided through the methods of analyzing many of the problems contained inside, this book will only confuse you.

The book does provide many excellent examples, but unfortunately some of these are severely lacking in explanation, leaving you to puzzle over WHY the authors chose to solve problems the way they did; other problem types are completely missing a corresponding example and are just as confusing. Obviously, if this textbook is a requirement for your class, reading this review won't persuade you not to buy it. To be honest, I would actually recommend buying it rather than borrowing or leasing, because once you have been instructed in its use it has a ton of helpful information and I have been using it for reference at my place of employment.

However, don't expect to pick it up as something to read for knowledge without a course to accompany it.

This is probably one of the best Mechanical Engineering books that I have ever purchased. This is definitely a book you want on your bookshelf for possible later use. This book essentially allows you to teach yourself this class hoping that's not the case , but is still one of the hardest classes with ME's. Buy it here and not at the bookstore to save a little money. Matt K. Top Contributor: Bought this as a reference book for my engineering job.

The example problems being in SI units is a really minor issue considering how much cheaper this is than the US hardcover version. Might not work for homework in school, but it works great as a refresher for me at work! And thankfully it does a decent job Shigley's is a go to text for mechanical engineers and rightfully so.
