Paperback Verified Purchase. I am looking forward for the next edition of this great book! One person found this helpful. I am currently testing code for a message box and this book has a lot of information regarding setting up Wamp or Mamp for using MYSQL.
I have so far found much of the book very useful and have read about half of it. I do recommend it because it offers a great deal of information overall to set up and understand php and MySQL function.
They are so easy yet so complicated. Worth the money to spend on this book. This book teaches you the wrong way to do something so that you can better understand the right way.
Since I'm the kind of person who needs to be able to fail in order to learn, that has helped tremendously. In fact, one of the first things it teaches is how to create your own error handling function, which is an indispensable practice and something I've implemented into all the apps I've made since. I really can't stress enough how much I like the method of teaching that this author uses because I am so much more comfortable coding on my own than I have been with other books.
The only reason I am giving this three out of five stars is because PHP has changed drastically in the three years since this book's release. In fact, if I update my server's PHP to version 5.
Fortunately, you can roll your server's version of PHP back to 5. If you want an easy guide to start practicing, this one does a great job of explaining how PHP works and how humans actually use computers. It is a shame that it hasn't been updated for PHP 5. This book is horrible, let's begin by writing some bad code that doesn't work and then forget all the stuff you just read about and let's do it right!
No thanks, I write enough bad code on my own, don't need to practice it. Then let's be unclear which segment of code you are talking about. Should have clearly labelled the section of code by it's file name, not make me try and remember or hunt through the code to see what it is.
With that being said, the book does makes some interesting points and covers topics that are normally not covered in classes. I'm taking this as a course in script languages and they should have left this manual missing. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.
This book is straight forward and easy to understand when it comes to explaining the actual code and workings of PHP and MySQL I'm still at the start though.
Hopefully now that I have everything installed and working I can concentrate on the code. The author explains the concepts and then takes you through multiple examples to get you going. I haven't yet started this textbook, but am very anxious to start it and learn how to do more with my non-Wordpress websites. I love the Missing Manual series as they have step-by-step tutorials to be used with free downloadable material. I'm very pleased with the price.

Showing Rating details. Sort order. Mar 24, Ashwani Gaur rated it it was amazing. Great Book! Quite similar to the one I read before. It uses a basic web app as the example project throughout the book, and each section builds on the previous ones. It covers a few PHP best practices, but not as many as I would've liked.
Notes follow. It must be called before any other output.
You construct a string using any calculations you need and pass info to sprintf. Use small functions with groupings or higher-level functions that assemble small functions in useful ways. Make simple calls rather than many calls. So, use the one that will be most clear and specific in a certain case. Feb 03, Jeff rated it it was ok Shelves: So, in 6 months or so, millions of servers will update to PHP 5. I was excited when I got this book from the library, since this edition was published less than a year ago November and hopefully would be a good resource.
Sadly, this is not the case, due to the use of deprecated code throughout the book. May 28, smvrnn rated it did not like it.
